Students in the FFA program planted tomatoes, peppers, and jalapeños as part of their spring plant sale. Throughout the growing season, Food Science students have been able to harvest these crops and transform the fresh produce into a variety of food products, including salsa, tomato pasta, and pizza sauce.
Through this hands-on, farm-to-table experience, students have learned about the journey food takes from production to the consumer. They have gained practical experience working with raw agricultural products while learning about food processing methods such as canning and dehydration, as well as the importance of food safety and proper processing techniques.
This project has provided students with a unique opportunity to see how agriculture and food science connect, taking a crop that was grown by their peers and turning it into a finished food product.
