ABERDEEN, S.D. – Days before graduating from Aberdeen Central High School, Kaylee Kiesow was competing at an International Science and Engineering Fair—and she came home a Grand Award winner.
Kiesow, who graduated from CHS on Sunday, took third place in her category at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
The event, held May 10-15 in Phoenix, Ariz., drew approximately 1,700 competitors from 60 different countries. Kiesow’s project, The Hidden Threat: Microplastics and Gut Development in Sea Urchins, took third place in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category.
At Central, Kiesow worked with science teacher Mr. Charles Hermansen. Prior to competing at the ISEF, Kiesow was named Grand Winner at the Northern South Dakota Science and Math Fair in March before advancing to the international level.
This fall, Kiesow plans to attend Utah Tech University for nursing with a minor in Spanish, where she received a Non-Resident Chancellor's Scholarship.
