Students in classroom: O.M. Tiffany, Simmons Elementary will receive SDDOE math improvement grants

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Aberdeen Public School District elementary schools will receive grants to improve mathematic outcomes for students with disabilities in grades Pre-K through 5.

O.M. Tiffany Elementary and Simmons Elementary will each receive $125,000 over four years as part of the South Dakota Department of Education’s State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) project.

These four-year math grants will focus on strengthening foundational math skills at O.M. Tiffany and Simmons. Staff will work directly with Northern State University on coursework, standards alignment, and instructional practices. While all students will benefit from this work, the schools were selected based on identified needs in math achievement and the level of support required for students receiving special education services. Five teachers from each school will participate using a train-the-trainer model to expand the impact across the schools.

Across the state, a total of eight schools were selected to participate in this program, according to a news release from the Department of Education. The other elementary schools are located in Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Sisseton and Winner.

“This grant strengthens our commitment to ensuring every student—especially those with disabilities—has access to high-quality math instruction,” said Shannon Malone, Director of Learning and Instruction, in the news release. “By investing in evidence-based practices, coaching, and family engagement, we’re building a foundation that will support students long after the grant ends.”
