Story time at Simmons Elementary Library

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Simmons Elementary Library has an updated look, thanks to summer renovations.

“We are excited this year to have new carpet, and the walls have a fresh coat of paint,” said Aberdeen Public Schools Elementary Teacher Librarian Carla Clark. “We got new cabinetry, so all of the bookshelves are new.”

Previously, the library had its original shelving from 1989, Clark said. The new, wheeled bookshelves give the library a lot more flexibility. The library also has new tables and chairs, and renovation work exposed the beams in the ceiling to increase the height of the library.

At Simmons, students visit the library once a week for 30 minutes, during which time they participate in activities, listen to a story read by Library EA Carie Bush, and have the opportunity to check out books.

Clark, who has been with the school district for 22 years, said school libraries are vital for staff and students.

“It is the center of learning. It is where students fall in love with books,” she said. “Our focus, our goal, is always to develop a love of literature and learning. We have the opportunity to meet students where they are. We have the opportunity to connect them with the things they are interested in, the things that they want to learn. It is a place where they get to pick.”

The best part of her job is when she’s able to connect a student with a book they love. Clark recalled a recent boy who had visited Storybook Land and wanted to read more about Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. When they got him a book, she said, “his face just lit up.”

“Probably the best part of the job is just the smiles that you get from kids when you get them the things that they would like to read,” she said, “and collaborating with teachers and students to support and extend their learning in the classroom.”
