Camille Kaul with her family

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen Public School District Assistant Superintendent Camille Kaul has been named the 2024 South Dakota Curriculum Leader of the Year.

The honor, awarded by the South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development (SDASCD), was announced at Monday’s Aberdeen Public School Board meeting.

The Curriculum Leader of the Year award recognizes an individual for outstanding contributions to curriculum development, advancement or implementation in the state of South Dakota.

Kaul has served as Assistant Superintendent for Aberdeen Public Schools since 2016 and is responsible for curriculum adoption in the district. Her role also involves overseeing federal programs, assessments, staff development, the English as a second language department, library services, and school counselors.

In her nomination, Aberdeen Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Becky Guffin praised Kaul’s thoughtful approach to curriculum design and classroom management, which cultivates an environment where students and staff feel both challenged and supported.

“Her passion, expertise and collaborative spirit make her an invaluable asset to any educational setting,” Guffin said. “She works tirelessly with staff, parents and community stakeholders to equip students and staff with the skills and attitudes necessary for success beyond the classroom.”

Kaul has worked for the school district for over 20 years. Prior to being named Assistant Superintendent in 2016, she served as a Special Education Teacher at Holgate Middle School (2003-2008), Holgate Middle School Assistant Principal (2008-2011), Simmons Elementary Principal (2011-2013) and School District Special Education Director (2013-2016).

“She is extremely dedicated to the profession and a noted leader among her colleagues,” Guffin said. “Mrs. Kaul’s expertise and commitment to students, parents and staff members is truly inspiring and worthy of recognition for her dedication, innovation and impact on education in South Dakota.”
