ABERDEEN, S.D. – Once a week, eighth-grade students at Simmons Middle School go into sixth-grade Core Enrichment classrooms to offer their help to the younger students.

It’s part of the Golden Crew, a program at Simmons that provides way for eighth graders to give back.

This is the third year for the Golden Crew program, said Simmons Counselor Angel Samson.

“We are branching off of what CHS has started with their ‘Golden Hour’ project, which focuses on giving back to the schools and community in a positive way,” Samson said. “SMS Golden Crew is made up of WEB Leaders who have been nominated by faculty members based on their level of responsibility, positive attitude, work ethic, kindness and willingness to put others ahead of themselves.”

This year’s Golden Crew members are Makayla Torbert, Logan Glodrey, Andie Timm, Kamdyn Borge, Baileigh Dannen, Quinn Huettl, Taryn Mettler, Collin Shuey, Kailey Venegas Mata, Hannah Moore, Braden Refsland, Ada Sharp, Keyana Stillman, Yandel Martinez, Kennedy Buechler, Dillynn Wicks, Preston Welke, Nilda Ortiz and Hailee Steckelberg.

During their weekly visits to sixth-grade Core Enrichment classes, the eighth graders may serve as aides to the teachers or work one-on-one with sixth graders.

Samson said Golden Crew members also help fellow eighth graders during math classes once a week, and they provide tours to new students as they arrive throughout the year. This spring, they will visit elementary schools to do activities in fifth-grade classrooms to help them transition to middle school.

“Ultimately, tutoring, mentoring and providing a positive example are our goals!” Samson said.
