Larry Thompson speaking at Central High School

Have you ever wondered what happens on a staff development day?

Friday, Oct. 6, was a staff development day at Aberdeen Public Schools, and while students had the day off, teachers were busy learning.

Staff development is developed from many factors, at a district level, school level, grade level and department level, said Camille Kaul, Assistant Superintendent.

“The overarching focus is our district goals and school improvement plans,” Kaul said, “in addition to staying abreast of the newest topics in education.”

The purpose, Kaul said, is to continuously improve the academic strategies offered to students, reinforce foundational skills of good teaching, keep up to date with changes in education and stay current with federal, state, and local requirements.

Friday’s staff development included sessions dealing with technology, book studies, and Mental Health First Aid, among others. Also, presenter Larry Thompson spoke at Central High School, discussing responsibility-centered discipline.

In total, the district has 10 staff development days from Aug. 15 to May 17, 2024. New certified staff have an additional two days prior to school starting to help with orientation.
