Aberdeen Central High School female athletes will soon have additional college financial assistance via the newly established Lynn Hanson Endowment within the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation.
Once fully funded, the endowment will provide one scholarship each year for a female CHS graduate who excels in academics and athletics. Successful candidates will be community-minded individuals who use their positive energy to influence others and challenge their expectations outside of school. They must be willing to participate and encourage other young women to be successful role models. Students must be pursuing a 4-year college degree to qualify.
The endowment was established in 2015 with an initial gift from Hanson’s children, grandchildren and great grandchild in honor of her long-term commitment to the Aberdeen School District students and staff on the event of her 80th birthday. Lynn Hanson served on the Aberdeen Board of Education from 1985-2000, serving as vice president for four years and president in 1996-97. She continues as a lead volunteer guiding the work of the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation. She has served from 2002 to present on the Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation Board and continues to be instrumental to the establishment and success of the CHS Hall of Fame and the Alumni Room. She is also an avid fan and supporter of all CHS athletics, especially the CHS girls’ volleyball and basketball teams, attending all of their matches/games over several decades. Hanson served five years on the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors. All four of her children are CHS graduates.
“Mom’s relentless dedication to ensuring that students of the Aberdeen School District have the total support and encouragement of the community is inspirational. Nothing is more important to her than helping all students realize their full potential. We could think of no better way to honor her dedication than through the establishment of this endowment.” said Troy Hanson (CHS Class of 1987).
