CHS students viewing the mock crash scene at Monday's safe driving event

On Monday, Oct. 16, hundreds of Aberdeen Central High School students got an up-close look at why safe driving is so important.

This week is Teen Driver Safety Week, and CHS School Resource Officer John Kirnan organized Monday's safe driving event, which was held in Central's west parking lot.

The event included the South Dakota Highway Patrol Rollover Simulator Trailer. Students watched the trailer roll with a crash test dummy inside and saw the impact when that dummy was not wearing a seat belt.

A mock crash was also set up for students to view, which included some of their peers wearing makeup to simulate injuries.  Emergency responders were on hand as part of this mock accident scene as well.

Also as part of this week’s events, there will be a showing of CHS student Katelyn Ryan’s award-winning PSA about the dangers of distracted driving. Ryan’s powerful video—starring CHS students—won first place in the nation in the #DrivingSkills101 Public Service Announcement challenge, co-sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions and the National Road Safety Foundation.
